what you're doing when you're a maths teaching expert and have been doing it for over 15 years. Well... this 'dyscalculia expert' has really learned something today!!!
ALWAYS LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE DISABILITY AND TAKE THEIR ADVICE!!!
My Maths Solutions catch phrase was initially 'because anyone can do maths with the right teaching'. After a very insightful post by one of the group members who live day in day out with dyscalculia, I realised an innocently meant remark like that could be soul-destroying from her postition. It is like saying that dyscalculia doesn't exist (the maths teaching site I am not allowed to name here, did say that to her when she asked them if they know about dyscalculia), or that anyone can learn their times tables and how to add fractions. Let me reiterate that was not what I meant. Even so, I've removed the phrase from my logo etc. and feel much better about it. Yes, I can help people with dyscalculia, but not with the intention of 'fixing' them, It's all about finding the support they need to help them function in this world where most people (even teachers) have never even heard the word and have got no idea of its far reaching effects on day-to-day life and activities.
